The UC Noyce Initiative has reached a significant milestone in its mission to advance digital innovation for the public good. Today, (May 13) the Initiative announced the launch of a new graduate student fellowship program designed to support the next generation of interdisciplinary researchers across five University of California campuses.

The UC Noyce Initiative has announced a new round of research awards totaling nearly $3.4 million to support collaborative teams advancing computational health and cybersecurity across the University of California system.

The room hummed with energy as clusters of faculty, researchers and students leaned into conversation, gesturing toward posters, exchanging ideas and making connections in real time.

Earlier this month, three physicists affiliated with the University of California system — John Clarke of UC Berkeley, Michel H. Devoret of UC Santa Barbara and Yale University, and John M. Martinis of UC Santa Barbara — were awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantization in an electric circuit, according to the prize announcement.

When Vice Chancellor for Research Simon Atkinson reflects on his new role as chair of the UC Noyce Initiative executive committee, he envisions more than a collection of projects or programs. On October 3, UC Noyce Initiative Researcher Irfan Siddiqi became part of history when California Governor Gavin Newsom visited his quantum research laboratory at UC Berkeley to sign landmark legislation designed to accelerate innovation in quantum science and technology.

On June 16, leading scientists, faculty and research executives from across five University of California campuses gathered at UC San Francisco’s Mission Bay campus for a high-stakes strategic workshop hosted by the UC Noyce Initiative.

These ideas were then presented as recommendations to the UC Noyce Initiative's executive committee for their consideration as part of an on-going request for proposals (RFP) process.
