Earlier this month, three physicists affiliated with the University of California system — John Clarke of UC Berkeley, Michel H. Devoret of UC Santa Barbara and Yale University, and John M. Martinis of UC Santa Barbara — were awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantization in an electric circuit, according to the prize announcement.

On October 3, UC Noyce Initiative Researcher Irfan Siddiqi became part of history when California Governor Gavin Newsom visited his quantum research laboratory at UC Berkeley to sign landmark legislation designed to accelerate innovation in quantum science and technology. 

The race to perfect the quantum computer is on — and researchers across the University of California campuses are helping position the nation at the front of the pack.

The UC Noyce Initiative is proud to announce that new funding opportunities are now available to advance collaborative research in quantum technology among five campuses within the University of California system.

The grants, which will range from up to $600,000 to $800,000, will support partnerships between the five UC campuses that are part of The UC Noyce Initiative: Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, San Francisco, Santa Barbara. Applications are due April 24, 2024. 

In honor of International Women’s Day on March 8, the University of California, Davis, College of Engineering recognized some key female engineers  in recognition for how they inspire inclusion in engineering. Among those recognized were two researchers from the UC Noyce Initiative: Child Family Professor in Engineering Chen-Nee Chuah and Associate Professor Marina Radulaski.

Two teams of researchers led by Marina Radulaski, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, recently won University of California grants — including one from the UC Noyce Initiative — that promise to give scientists a better understanding of quantum information sciences—a rapidly-emerging technology that stands to transform the way society interacts with computers and technology.

What is quantum science? What type of innovations can come from researching it, and how can that technology impact our daily lives and the lives of future generations?

For decades, UC Berkeley has invested in research around basic quantum science, building a strong foundation and rich ecosystem of more than a dozen institutes, groups and colleges across campus dedicated to its study.
