UC Noyce Initiative Fellow
Emily Joyce is a Ph.D. student in dynamical neuroscience at UC Santa Barbara, where she develops models to investigate how neural systems respond to and interact with emerging neurotechnologies. Her research focuses on next-generation retinal prostheses, combining models of human retinal circuitry with neural stimulation simulations to investigate how future devices might not only restore vision, but meaningful aspects of visual perception such as color. Before beginning her Ph.D., Joyce worked in large-scale circuitry and connect omics research at the Allen Institute and Janelia Research Campus. She holds a B.A. in Neuroscience from Scripps College. Her broader research interests lie at the intersection of computational neuroscience, neurotechnology, machine learning and neural engineering, with the goal of developing more precise and biologically informed approaches to interfacing with the nervous system.
UC Noyce Initiative Research Project Summary
Joyce creates AI and computational models of the human retina to explore how next-generation retinal implants could be designed to restore richer, more natural color vision for people who are blind.
